Specifying a Joomla template in a URL

How to specify in the URL that Joomla is to use a particular template when displaying a particular resource. …

I needed this trick for a client who was giving the URL of a Joomla resource in his emails. In Joomla, that resource was assigned to a non-default template, and when navigating to that resource from within Joomla it was displaying with the intended template. When an email recipient clicked on the URL, however, the resource was displayed with the site's default template.

The solution is to specify the desired template in the URL. How this is done depends upon your version of Joomla. Append the following to the URL:

  • Joomla 1.0: &jos_change_template=TEMPLATE_NAME
  • Joomla 1.5: &template=TEMPLATE_NAME
  • Joomla 1.6+: TODO

This information has been tested on Joomla 1.5.22 and was last updated 2 September 2012.
