Updating Joomla 1.6-2.5

How to update Joomla 1.6 through 2.5.

This article is for updating Joomla version 1.6 and later. There is a separate article for updating Joomla 1.5 and earlier.

The Joomla documentation project has an excellent article on updating Joomla; make it your primary resource. What follows is additional information I find helpful.

Being easiest, try the Extension Manager update method (“Method A”) first. If it fails, you will have to locate the update file on JoomlaCode before you can try other update methods.

On one slow remote server, I had good results with the following:

  1. Using ssh, go to Joomla’s temporary directory and create a new subdirectory where we will be working.
  2. Using wget, copy the update or patch package from JoomlaCode directly to the subdirectory on the server.
  3. Using ssh, decompress the package.
  4. In Joomla, install the update using the “Install from Directory” option.

If you have language packs installed, you will have to update them separately.
