Opera contacts

Tips and tricks I find helpful when using contacts in Opera’s mail client.

Contacts can be organized into folders. The folder editor appears identical to the contact editor, but data entered into most offered fields will be silently discarded. The only fields that work are name, notes, and chat nickname.

Contacts are stored internally in the file contacts.adr. The default location for this file is platform-specific:

  • Linux: ~/.opera/
  • Windows: %systemdrive%\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\

The default location can be changed in the MailBox section of the preferences editor at opera:config. This is handy for tasks like using third-party tools to synchronize your contacts across multiple computers.

The file contacts.adr is a plain text file in a self-documented XML-like format, so it isn’t difficult to edit or parse if needed.
