Favicons in Joomla

Joomla handles favicons a little differently than do static sites.

Joomla requires favicons to have the name favicon.ico and looks for them in three different locations. The order of precedence is:

  1. Favicon in active template
  2. Favicon in Apache docroot
  3. Favicon in Joomla docroot

A favicon may be placed in the top directory of any template. Frontend templates are in templates/ and backend templates are in administrator/templates/. Joomla looks here first for a favicon to serve with any page associated with the given template.

A favicon may be placed in the Apache docroot. Joomla looks here first for a favicon to serve with system pages not associated with any template, such as 404 error pages.

A favicon may be placed in the Joomla docroot. This is often the Apache docroot, but it need not be.

See the favicon notes for general information and instructions on creating a favicon.

Thanks for the tip. While I prefer to roll my own favicons, this looks like a great solution for many people.
